Guests will encounter famous tribal groups, witness traditional ceremonies, trek through mountain villages, and experience the unique cultures that make Papua New Guinea one of the most culturally diverse destinations in the world
Arrive in Goroka where you will be met by your guide and transferred to your accommodation. After settling in, begin your cultural journey with a visit to the nearby Asaro Valley. Here you will learn about the fascinating history of the legendary Asaro Mudmen, famous for their clay masks and dramatic warrior performances. The day includes storytelling about the origin of the Mudmen and an introduction to village life before returning to your lodge or hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, return to Asaro Village for a full cultural experience with the Mudmen. The morning begins with the Noko Moko cultural presentation followed by the famous Mudmen performance. Guests will witness the traditional masked warriors emerging from the mist in a dramatic reenactment of their legendary story. After lunch, enjoy a guided trek into the surrounding hills to visit the Mudmen mountain cave, where local guides share stories about tribal history and spiritual beliefs. Optional cultural demonstrations such as the cane swallowing performance may also be available. Return to the lodge or hotel in Goroka for overnight
Depart from Goroka and travel through scenic Highlands landscapes toward Simbu Province, known for its strong traditional culture and dramatic mountain scenery near Mount Wilhelm. Visit a mountain village where guests are welcomed with traditional singing performances. Experience several unique cultural demonstrations including traditional fire making, courtship songs, bachelor men performances, and a symbolic burning head ritual demonstration explained by local elders. Guests may also enjoy a guided village walk and taste fresh fruits offered by villagers. Overnight stay in the Simbu region.
Today visit the famous Skeleton Men village in Mindima. The Skeleton Men are known for their striking body paint that resembles human skeletons and represents ancestral spirits. During the village tour, guests will learn about the origin of the Skeleton Men tradition while observing several performances including insect hunters, dust shakers, and traditional storytelling. The tour also includes a guided walk through the village to learn about daily life and local customs. Overnight stay in the Simbu area
Travel to Jiwaka Province where visitors are welcomed with the traditional Two Flute Men ceremony. The flute music signals peace and friendship and marks the beginning of the cultural experience. Guests will witness body decoration demonstrations, learning about the meaning of traditional face and body paint before enjoying singing and dancing performances. Later in the day, local warriors perform a tribal fighting demonstration using traditional weapons while guides explain the cultural significance of tribal conflicts and land disputes. The day concludes with a traditional courtship and marriage exchange demonstration showing how relationships and alliances are formed in tribal society..
Continue the journey to Mount Hagen, one of the major cultural centers of the Highlands. Here you will meet the Melpa people and experience the famous Melpa cultural dances performed with the powerful rhythm of the Kundu drum. Guests will enjoy traditional singing, dancing, and storytelling explaining the history and traditions of the tribe. Later, travel to a nearby waterfall where the Melpa dancers perform again in a beautiful natural setting, offering excellent photo opportunities. Overnight stay in Mount Hagen.
Travel into the Southern Highlands to the town of Tari, home of the famous Huli Wigmen. The Huli people are known for their elaborate wigs made from human hair and their striking yellow and red face paint. During the cultural tour, guests will witness the Wigmen decorating themselves before performing traditional singing and dancing. Visitors may also experience the fortune teller demonstration, widow woman storytelling, and bachelor boys performances that explain the social roles within Huli society
Spend another day exploring the traditions and natural landscapes of the Huli region. Walk through forest paths to visit a ceremonial cave where the Wigmen perform chanting rituals and explain their spiritual traditions. Later, continue to a scenic waterfall where the Huli Wigmen perform again in a dramatic natural setting. For adventurous travelers, an optional trek to the summit of Mount Wilhelm is available. The experience begins with a safety briefing and preparation before starting the climb through forest and alpine environments. On the second day, climbers attempt the early morning summit ascent to witness sunrise from the highest point in Papua New Guinea. The final day includes descent and return to the Highlands region
